Thank you for sharing these thoughts.
I am still wondering how people can be so disciplined. I am not. And I will never be disciplined.
Maybe you have an answer.
Therefore, I don’t think that discipline is the only way to achieve goals. It can be one option, but there are many others.
It is hard work and going the extra mile; it’s creativity, perseverance, integrity, passion, and having and believing in a dream. You need to be open-minded and see the positive aspects to learn, even in the most annoying tasks. And yes, I had indeed around 20% discipline in my life.
I grew up in lower class, and I finally did a master at one of the top 10 universities globally, then a Ph.D. at one of the top universities, I was one of the fastest progressing consultants up to partner level in a leading global consultancy firm. Except for a mortgage, I am debt-free. And I have supported my unemployed mother for years that she can have a respectful life. But I never was disciplined.
My experience is that having a broad and sometimes distracted journey is more effective in achieving a goal faster than the focus on discipline and the one goal. Today, when I am mentoring people, I never coach them discipline. But I am telling them what I have learned at the small farm of my grandparents where I grew up: hard work, use your brain, integrity, keep your word, see the positive side of a task and go for your dreams.
